Anti-oxidants
Antioxidants, Supplements and Minerals

Antioxidants are powerful in the use of reducing the risk of cancer, helping prevent cancer recurrences, decreasing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and generally improving the results of conventional treatments.

Certain specific vegetables and fruits are the most powerful weapons in the fight against cancer. The phrase “antioxidant” was developed in the 1920’s to describe a substance that fought against rust and other forms of oxidation. Free Radicals are molecules that are generated by oxygen containing compounds. Free radicals within the body can set off little chain reactions that wreak havoc. They are believed to be responsible for causing ageing and many diseases such as cancer.

In the last 10 years, research has confirmed that antioxidants are an essential part of a cancer fighting program. Antioxidants are our first and foremost defence against cancer of any stage. Unfortunately, although thousands of scientific reports confirm this, many doctors do not prioritise this fact due to lack of indepth training at medical school.

The Action of Anti-oxidants

Around every atom are electrons spinning in pairs. A "free radical" is the name given to an atom with at least one unpaired electron. As a consequence of this, the single electron without its matching partner, now becomes unstable whilst on a hunt to find another electron to fit the gap. Part of this action involves tearing electrons from other atoms, hence a chain reaction occurs, which in turn causes damage to other atoms.

"Antioxidants" have many electrons that they can afford to give up to stop this rampage. Vitamin C is a classic example of an antioxidant that gives up its electrons to repair this missing gap! Unfortunately, the number of free radicals within our bodies outweighs the amount of antioxidants we consume.

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is another powerful antioxidant. The action of ALA actually increases the effectiveness of other antioxidants such as vitamin C by doubling its action. People fighting active cancer should always supplement sufficient vitamin C with ALA.

According to Ralph Moss, essential antioxidants in the prevention of cancer are:-

  • A good multivitamin/mineral Supplement (without iron)
  • Vitamin A 10 to 20,000 IU
  • Vitamin C 500 to 2000 milligrams
  • Vitamin E 200 to 1200 IU
  • Co-Enzyme Q10 30 to 300 milligrams
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid 50 to 200 milligrams
  • Zinc 15 to 30 milligrams
  • Selenium 200 micrograms
  • Pycnogenol, grape seeds 50 to 300 milligrams
  • Mixed Cartenoids 10,000 to 25,000 IU

If you are fighting active cancer, it is advisable to consult a holistic doctor or nutritionist to help fine- tune an antioxidant programme to boost the immune system. It is advisable to only buy reputable brands and purchase natural (not synthetic) products - see resources for recommended suppliers of such supplements.
