Our toxic environment

It has been confirmed by scientists around the world that environmental pollution is one of the biggest problems facing humanity today. Scientists also believe that human activities are threatening the biosphere, which is a thin layer on the surface of the earth where life occurs. The biosphere maintains a variety of life, including human life, yet humans are destroying the natural systems upon which life depends.

After thousnads of years of living in chemical balance, mankind has literally changed the chemistry of our environment through progressive poisoning of our environment with the chemical by-products from modern agriculture, power generation, industry and transportation. The chemical damage these poisons cause are not restricted to the areas where they are released. Scientists have found evidence of pollution everywhere on the planet, from the largest cities to the remote South Pole.

To give you an example of the quantity of poison we are exposed to each year, consider the following amounts released into our environment during the year 1989 alone:-

1) Over 550,000,000 pounds of industrial chemicals were dumped into public sewage storage.
2) More than 1,000,000,000 pounds of chemicals were released into the ground, threatening our natural ground water sources.
3) Over 188,000,000 pounds of chemicals were discharged into surface waters, i.e. lakes and rivers.
4) More than 2,400,000,000 pounds of air emissions were pumped into the atmosphere.

The grand total of chemical pollutants released into the environment was 5,705,670,380 pounds. You can imagine what conditions are like now more than 20 years later. Listed below are just a few of the pollutants that we consume or come into contact with.

Toxins in Our Food
In the United States for example, over 10,000 food and chemical additives are put into the food supply. The average American eats around 14 pounds of additives a year! in addition to colorings, preservatives, flavorings, emulsifiers, humectants, and antimicrobials, they consume on average 120 pounds of sugar and eight pounds of salt.

Our Water Supply
Chlorine, flouride and other added chemicals to our tap water, add to pollution of our bodies (see water). Unfiltered water should never be drunk. The best water supply is either filtered/distilled water, or via a Reverse osmosis filter (see resources)

Animal Produce
Animals are fed hormone drugs which increase produce to unnatural levels along with increasing body tissue for meat consumption (see Humans are carnivores). Poultry are also fed drugs to increase egg laying and body weight. The produce we eat contain traces of the drugs the animals were originally fed! This has been linked to hormone related cancers such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, ovarian cancer, etc.
Cleaning and domestic products
Not many people are aware of the potentially toxic chemicals found in most modern cleaning chemicals from disinfectant, toilet cleaners, washing up liquids, toothpaste, deodorants, glass cleaners, to name but a few! Always buy non-toxic cleaners and personal care products (see resources).
Personal Care and Hygiene products
Underarm deodorants contain a variety of chemicals, one of which is aluminium. These products are applied directly to the underarm area, where major lymph glands exist. Could this be a link to an increase in breast cancer over the last 20 years?
Our Health May Be Adversely Affected!
Recent studies estimate that each year there are 3,000,000 severe pesticide poisonings with 220,000 deaths worldwide. Pesticide-related illnesses are estimated to occur between 150,000 and 300,000 times a year. This situation begs an important question! What can we do to protect ourselves from the damaging effects caused by toxins in our environment, food, or even internal pollution?
The Need for Correct Nutrition for Effective Detoxification
The body goes through a continuous cycle of activity in an effort to protect itself from the adverse effects of toxicity and pollution. This detoxification cycle is essentially dependent on adequate nutrition. People may not be nourished by the average modern diet. A test studying over 15,000 peoples diets, showed that 84% of them were consuming poor diets, which do not supply the essential nutrients needed to maintain good health.
What Can we do?
Obviously, we can not stop our bodies receiving a certain amount of environmental pollution, but we can help by buying organic food, fruit and vegetables (organic qualified foods can not be grown by use of pesticides, or contain any colours and preservatives, or be fed any form of drugs). Ensure you are having the adequate nutritional needs (see anti-cancer diet and supplements). Buy only non toxic personal, cleaning and household products (see resources).
